Hey guys! I remember where we left off, halfway through my final homestay of the Global Bridge Program. It’s getting to that time of the year… there are lasts now. While it is saddening, it’s reminding me to take every moment with the people that I have and cherish them and the memories that we’re making.
The highlights of the last week in Elena’s included attending a lively church service in the street. We took a short walk through the neighborhood where the crowd was gathering. It was a wonderful time to stand and worship, even if I wasn’t entirely sure what song we were singing. There was a moment when I did recognize a song or two from church, or by being able to decipher the Spanish into its English counterpart.
After homestays ended, we went on an excursion to the capital city, Santo Domingo on the 16th. We got to take a tour of the oldest cathedral in the western hemisphere, and it was absolutely stunning. (Pictures below!) According to some of the signs, they still have mass there on Sunday mornings and a part of me was really curious as to what it would be like to attend. It was hot and so Faith and I solved that problem by getting some ice cream. Later in the day, we traveled to the Agora mall, which reminded me strongly of the Mall of America in Minneapolis. Faith and I got to walk around and see all of the shops and got some great food in the food court.
The next week was a normal week of sites. The kids were excited to see me again, especially one of the younger boys named Wetsson. He’s always been very quiet, but recently, he’s become quite the chatterbox and we’ve been having a great time learning our colors and playing with toy trucks. The students continue to grow in their reading and math capabilities, and I’m so proud of the work that they’ve been putting in recently.
On the 23rd, Saturday, we were meant to have two teams arrive. One from Indiana, and another from Seattle. Half of the Indiana team arrived. Flights have been a mess recently, due to weather. At the time of writing this, Sunday night, the other half of the Indiana team had arrived. The Seattle team is still stuck in Florida. Prayers that the Seattle team would make it to Santiago with enough time to participate in the ministry sites would be very appreciated. This upcoming week is Spring break, which in addition to the lack of homework, my mom and my grandma are (as I’m writing) on a flight from JFK to Santiago. There was a short moment where those flights were also cancelled, although God is good, and they were able to find some other ones.
Thank you so much for reading my post! I appreciate all the prayers. I’ll see you all in two weeks, on April 8th (March went by so fast) with stories from Spring Break.
¡Hasta luego, y'all!
